Teachers have been challenged to ensure proper grooming of learners  while carrying out their duties.

The call was made by Dr Alvera Mukabaramba, the State Minister for Local Government while meeting teachers and students in Bushoki sector, Rulindo District on Wednesday.

Mukabaramba said achieving quality education requires early preparation without waiting for examination time.

"As teachers you have the responsibility to shape children’s behaviour in addition to education. You have to ensure children are disciplined and live in harmony with their peers,” she said.

"Life is very challenging when one is educated but lacks discipline; it is hard for them to fit in society, that is not what we want for the future of our country.”

During the same meeting, children who emerged best in various disciplines in recent competitions at district level were recognised.

Mukabaramba urged the students to work hard at school.

He also urged them to uphold discipline, saying discipline and respect should define them.

Children who participated in the competition said it was a good opportunity to test their abilities.

"I am really excited; I participated in the competition but did not believe I could emerge among the best. This is the opportunity to prove ourselves,” said Annet Ishimwe, a P5 pupil.

Teachers and local leaders committed to work closely with parents and children to ensure quality education and discipline among students.
