Rwandan poets are adding their voice to bringing out the plight of Burundians through poetry.

The poets, under Spoken Word Rwanda (SWR) initiative, have dedicated their end of year poetry edition to the people of Burundi.

The edition will take place today evening at PiliPili Lounge Kibagabaga Kigali under the theme, "Stand for Burundi.”

The poets have filmed and shared videos on social media depicting their sentiments on the ongoing crisis in the neighbouring country.

"We filmed SWR poets sharing their sentiments in recital on the tragedy befalling our brothers and sisters next-door. We are sharing their videos on our social media platforms ahead of this year’s last SWR edition,” Diana Mpyisi, the founder of SWR, said.

Yvan Ndarabasa, one of the poets, is seen in a YouTube video calling on Rwandans not to be indifferent to "their cousin” Burundi in a poem he recites in Kinyarwanda.

"Rwanda’s cousin is looking to us. We lay idle waiting for the outcome. With great love I am overcome by sorrow. I can see nothing but darkness.”

Other poets also have recited on YouTube echoing similar messages.

Today’s session features renowned poets such as Eric Ngangare, Natasha Muziramakenga, Kaya, Yvan Ndabarasa and Angel Uwamahoro.

All proceeds for this month from SWR’s cover charge of Rwf2,000 will go to supporting the Mahama Camp that is host to tens of thousands of Burundian Refugees.
