GASABO - Green Hills Academy, Wednesday donated educational materials to 80 primary school-going orphans who live in Kinyinya Genocide Survivors’ Community in the Gasabo district.

According to Albert Musabyimana, the leader of the community, it is made up of 125 houses which were built in 2005 for homeless Genocide survivors from different parts of the country.

In his remarks, Musabyimana thanked the management and entire staff of Green Hills Academy who made it a point to come and donate the much needed educational materials.

He added that this would motivate and encourage the pupils to work hard in their studies since some of them were sometimes demoralised by the lack of materials.

The items donated included exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers and sharpeners. The leader of the Green Hills Academy staff, Shamillah Buhura, said even though the children had many needs, they had decided to come and encourage the pupils to value their education by giving them the materials which would help them because ultimately it is education which would get them out of poverty.

The Executive Director of the Academy, Jill Fenton, said that they had decided to bring the children scholastic materials so they could be able to provide for themselves in future.

"There is a saying that, ‘give a person a fish today and he will eat it and need another one tomorrow, but teach a person to fish and he will provide the fish for him or herself,” she remarked.

Fenton added that she had so much hope that the children were going to study having it in mind that their future lay in their own hands.

On behalf of her fellow orphans, Jeanine Mukantaganda, thanked the Green Hills Academy staff for extending to them a hand of help and for their heart of love.

"We are going to utilise these materials and make sure that we get the best out of them,” she pledged.
