Police in Nyabihu District arrested two women who were trafficking 216 packets of banned brew.
The suspects wrapped the substances in a baby shawl and carried them on their backs masquarading as mothers carrying babies.
The duo, identified as Jacqueline Nzitukuze, 32, and Ruth Nyiramukamisha 37, was arrested on Saturday evening in Mukamira sector.
According to the Western region police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police Theobald Kanamugire, the suspects were aboard a commuter taxi that was coming from Musanze heading to Rubavu.
Each of the suspects was caught carrying 108 packets of the gin with brand name Blue Sky, wrapped in their backs.
"They wrapped baby shawls around the gin packets which they formed as a baby, wrapped well and dressed them like babies,” said CIP Kanamugire.
"We already had information that the two women had boarded a taxi with some illegal substance and we deployed our officers who stopped the vehicle and apprehended the two red-handed.”
Police thanked the public for providing information that led to the arrests and urged them to keep up this spirit of cooperation as it helps to keep society safe.
Kanamugire further warned against making, trafficking, sale and use of banned substances, noting that operations against such are ongoing and punitive penalties will be taken against anyone caught.
