Polling stations opened this morning for Rwandans living in the Diaspora to vote on the amended constitution where according to the electoral commission, 40,000 Rwandans from abroad are expected to participate.

The process is taking place in 32 embassies and High Commissions across the world, according to Charles Munyaneza, the executive secretary of the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Speaking to The New Times, Munyaneza said that so far voting was going on smoothly in most countries with no incidences reported by mid-morning while the exercise was expected to begin in other countries, depending on their time zones.

"The only country where voting is not taking part is Burundi due to security concerns there,” he said.

He said that the exercise would take place all day and would be extended to later in the evening depending on voter turnout.

As a sign of patriotism, a section of Rwandans living abroad took to social media under the hashtag #RwandansDecide posting images of themselves voting or in polling stations.

So far among countries where voting has begun include: Ethiopia, Uganda, United Kingdom, China, Sweden, Japan, Turkey, Netherlands, Zambia, Kenya among others.

For voters residing in the country, the polls will take place tomorrow, where about 6.4 million voters are expected to participate in the voting.

More than 68,000 election volunteers are expected to assist the commission in the process.
