The issuing of the new electronic national identity cards has now moved to the Northern Province, the National ID Project Coordinator, Pascal Nyamurinda, revealed yesterday. He said that the exercise is currently in the districts of Musanze, Gakenke, Gicumbi and Rulindo.
"The exercise began in Musanze, on Friday Gakenke then Gicumbi and Rulindo next week. We have been busy sensitising people to come and pick their IDs,” he explained.
According to Nyamurinda, in a week’s time, production of the IDs for Nyagatare and Gatsibo in the Eastern Province will be complete.
"Because Sectors and Districts have to make reports on how the distribution is progressing, work is slow. Even people delay to come and pick their IDs which consumes too much time.” Pascal explained.
The exercise was supposed to have covered the whole country before the inauguration of Parliamentary elections in September.
Nyamurinda revealed that reports from District and Sector authorities indicate that about 85 per cent of Southern Province residents have turned up to collect their IDs.
