A new communal market called Zinnia market in Kicukiro District has officially opened. The market according to officials is expected to accommodate at most 700 vendors.

Jean de Dieu Musoni, the district Director of Planning said the construction that was co-financed by the district treasury and Community Development Fund (CDF) started four years ago.

"The official launching was expected before March but it was delayed because the district authority was still working on the rental fees and also drafting rules of regulating the market,” Musoni explained.

Musoni says it is aimed to reduce poverty in the district through facilitation of business operations. He added that a week and half ago, the district was registering vendors for stalls, the work which was expected to be done with in a period of one week.

"Upon completion, the market is now open to the public and vendors and the public are expected to handle with care every facility at the premises,” he said.

Residents

One of the residents and a prospective vendor in the market, Janet Mukakaragwa said the coming of the new market will also bring convenience to the workers.

She explained that it will also help protect their goods that are always exposed to the sun and end up being destroyed.
