Airtel and Save the Children Rwanda have donated over 700 children’s story books to communities in Ruganwa village, Kamutwa cell and surrounding areas in Kacyiru Sector, Gasabo District.
The initiative aims at helping develop children’s reading skills by providing them opportunities to practice and enjoy reading outside the school environment, Catherine Mercy, the Save the Children education co-ordination and partnerships manager, said.
She added that, in addition to helping children improve their reading skills, "it is a safe way to keep children engaged in a productive and fun way.”
Mercy noted that reading is vital because it helps influence children’s overall future education attainment.
She thanked Airtel for giving back to the community in which they operate, especially through supporting children’s education.
Airtel Rwanda managing director Michael Adjei said the firm values literacy and a good education.
"These books will help the children in our communities to acquire literacy skills that they can use in schools and in their daily lives,” Adjei said.
