Just like it is with handbags, shoes and earrings, necklaces are a necessary accessory for every woman and for that reason, it’s important to choose the right one for a fantastic look.
A necklace can either make or break your outfit. For a sophisticated look, it is wise to try a thin and elegant necklace, something that won’t pull too much focus.
Joy Uwimana is a designer and the owner of Joy Little Boutique at Kigali City Market. She says necklaces come in different styles and have been a huge trend since time immemorial. They are also adored and worn by both the elderly and the young.
"For a stunning look, accessorise that cleavage showing blouse with a necklace,” she says.
Uwimana also adds that chunky necklaces are also in style and can go with a little black dress (or any dress for that matter), or even a casual outfit.
However, Uwimana advises that colourful necklaces should be worn on plain outfits to avoid clashing.
James Habimana makes jewellery and handbags and has a shop in Kimironko Market.
"Necklaces enhance an outfit, but you have to be careful to pick the right one. They are elegant; and there’s a necklace for every outfit and occasion,” he says.
Habimana adds that for women who like to keep their outfits simple and cool, a necklace is the best accessory to finish that look. They are fun and chic.
"Gold or silver are the most popular, but even colourful necklaces are becoming popular,” Habimana says.

How to layer up your necklaces
•When layering them up, the best way to go about it is by starting with the shorter one, pick the chunkier one, and long enough than the first one to make them rhyme for that stylish look.
•For the larger ones, it’s always ideal to pair them with dainty chains. If you want your outfit colour to stand out, layer the bright necklaces so that they are able to rest right on top of each other.
•Thin necklaces should always come before large ones if you layering them up, so that they arrange themselves in an orderly manner.
