We need to invest in our religious sites

RE: "The Pope’s visit and our potential for religious tourism” (The New Times, November 29).

Dear Mr. Ssenyonga, keep up with your well thought articles. I like the way you develop your sense of vision for the region.

You’re indeed right; the problem we have is losing sense of the long-term direction in our planning. From my personal observation, we’re very good at packaging short-term strategies: for instance the annual visitation of Namugongo and so on.

But, our policy-makers fail to capture the long-term projects, whereby they can invest in these sites to attract tourists all over the world to come and witness with their own eyes how Africans truly embraced Christianity to extent of offering their lives for Christ.

Though, I would like to raise another point of our heritage sites such as Nyanza to be promoted by the tourism industry, if permissible by our leaders, to apply to United Nations (Unesco) for its preservation.
