Allone needed was to be a music lover to have a good time at The Neptunes’ third edition of the Jazz Junction Party at the People’s Night Club in Kacyiru. This was on Friday evening where a cocktail of jazz was delivered in style.
The party started at 8 pm, and had 9 acts enjoy their "15 minutes of fame” in front of an audience of appreciative fans. This included guest performances from Dutch trombonist Pim, local Afro-soul sensation, Mike Kayihura and seasoned Chilean guitarist, Tito Al Uribe.
However the night belonged to Ugandan Herbert Kiggundu aka Herbert Rock, the band’s lead saxophonist who added flavor to most of the performances while emcee of the night Remmy Lubega filled in the gaps.
The band kicked off the night with two compositions before Pim stepped on stage. He performed 4 compositions like All Of Me, Misty, with the characteristic big and sharp sound of the trombone to the delight of the crowd.
Tito al Uribe showed his 40 years’ guitar experience with Duke Ellington’s Take a Train, Chick Corea’s Spain and John Coltrane’s Impressions.
Band guitarist of Limbali Solo, from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) also had the crowd dance to his rendition of Davido’s Aye.
The band singers impressed with their selection of big hits. Namudope did seven renditions including the jazz singer’s Aint No Sunshine and Adele’s Skyfall. Local artist Elion Victory, delivered his song Umutuzo and renditions, John Legend’s Tonight (thankfully not the ubiquitous All Of Me) a rendition of Boyz 2 Men and Till the end of the road.
To take it up a notch higher was Mike Kayihura, who with just his piano had the ladies screaming as he did Champion and John Lenon’s Stand by Me.
Kiggundu was on hand to bring the night to a climax with pieces like Young-Holt Unlimited’s Soulful Strut, Shakey Horton’s Groove Work, Micheal Jackson’s Human Nature. The saxophonist who has nine years experience had the crowd on their feet before the show ended minutes after 11 pm.
