Amavubi have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over Somalia in a Group A match on Friday in Awassa City, Ethiopia.
Mukura forward Yussufu Habimana put Rwanda ahead after just six minutes with his first international goal before Police winger Jacques Tuyisenge netted the second on the 52nd minute, while six minutes later, his teammate, Hegman Ngomirakiza completed the score line.
It was Tuyisenge’s third goal of the tournament after scoring in each of the first two matches against hosts Ethiopia (1-0) and in the 2-1 defeat to Tanzania. Rwanda is second in the group with six points, behind Tanzania.
After the win over Ethiopia last Saturday and the defeat to the Kilimanjro Stars on Tuesday, yesterday’s win will be a welcome relief for the under-fire Johnny McKinstry.
If Ethiopia beat Tanzania on Saturday, Amavubi will wait for the best loser in Group C, but in case Rwanda finishes in second position, they will play against second team in Group B. Tanzania also booked their ticket to the last eight.
