National handball league champions, Police have started preparations for the 27th edition of the East and Central Africa Handball Federation (ECAHF) Senior Club Championship slated for December 6-12 in Kigali.
Sgt. Albert Sibomana’s side on Sunday won the beach handball title for the third time in a row, to add to the league and Carres d’As titles despite their poor performance at the Africa Handball Champions League in Morocco where they did not win any single game and finished 15th out 16 teams.
Speaking to Times Sport, Sgt. Sibomana said they have begun daily training sessions at Kimisagara youth sports center grounds.
"We didn’t have a good campaign in the continental competitions, but we hope to do much better in the forthcoming regional tournament,” he said on Tuesday.
The two-time reigning national champions, Police finished fourth in last year’s tournament recording their best performance in the regional competition.
Last year’s edition was hosted by Tanzania in Dar-es-Salam and DR Congo’s Police won both the men and women’s titles.
The regional championship is expected to attract the top clubs from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, DR Congo and South Sudan in both men’s and women’s categories.
The games will be hosted at three grounds including Kimisagara, Amahoro Stadium and College of Education (former KIE) in Kimironko.
Rwanda will be represented by Police, APR and Gicumbi (men) while in the women’s category; it will be Appega Gahengeri and Ecole Secondaire Mukingi.
