Rwanda national team head coach Johnny McKinstry has said individual errors cost Amavubi Stars in the 3-1 home loss to Libya in the 2018 World Cup Russia qualifiers on Tuesday at Kigali Regional Stadium.
Libya dominated Rwanda over the two legs to advance to the group stages on 4-1 on aggregate, having won the first leg 1-0 on Friday in Sousse, Tunisia.
Mohamed Elmonir scored a brace in the 28th and 88th minutes while Mohamed Ghanudi grabbed the other in the 48thminute. Amavubi’s consolation goal was scored by Jacques Tuyisenge on the stroke of half time to make it 1-1.
"They deserved to go through because they have shown in the two games that they’re a bit more organised. In both games, we made individual errors which cost us," McKinstry, whose team has now lost six in a row in a space of just over two months, said after the game.
He added that, "We are already looking forward to the next game in CECAFA (regional championships) in Ethiopia."
"We lacked a killer instinct in front of Libya’s goal but we have to work hard with our strikers, who are honestly trying but sometimes they are not getting enough chances," the Northern Irishman noted.
Over the last few months, Rwanda has lost to Ghana 1-0, Gabon 1-0, Burkina Faso CHAN side 1-0, Tunisia U-23 1-0 as well as Libya (twice).
With this victory, the Mediterranean Knights revenged their 3-0 loss at the hands of Amavubi at the same venue last year in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 qualifiers.
Libya will join 19 other winners from the second round in the group stage which will pit four teams in five groups with the winners automatically qualifying for the 2018 Fifa World Cup that will be held in Russia.
