A visiting delegation of Kenyan Members of Parliament has commended Rwanda’s environment protection policy.
The delegation, comprising members of the standing committee in charge of implementation of the House’s decisions at Kenya’s National Assembly, was yesterday touring Rwandan Parliament.
MP John Kihagi, who headed the delegation, said Rwanda could offer an example to the world on environmental protection.
"Rwanda has really progressed in certain areas, notably environmental protection. It is a leading example on how a country can implement environmental laws successfully. The way Rwandans are undertaking land reforms is also a good example for us. In the building and construction sector, we also found that there is a leaf we can borrow, especially in line with construction approval,” he said.
Kihagi said they also want to learn from Rwanda about the country’s system of a bicameral parliament.
"We have had the senate since the last two years, and still have some challenges in implementing our new constitution and constitutional orders. But we believe that looking at what the Rwandan parliament has been doing, how the senate has operated together with the Chamber of Deputies, we can learn a lot from each other,” Kahiga said.
Donatilla Mukabalisa, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, said the visit will strengthen bilateral relationships between the two countries.
"The visit also gives us courage to work hard and better as we have to develop both our country and the region. It is our pride to see people learning from us,” she said.
The delegation is in the country for a one-week study visit, where they will meet officials of different government institutions.
