Taxi-moto operators in Ngororero District have been urged to respect traffic rules to ensure road safety.

The call was made by Ngororero District Police Commander Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Marc Minani, on Tuesday during a meeting that brought together over 400 motorcyclists operating in the district.

Participants were those organised in three motorcycle cooperatives namely; COTAMOGA, COTAMOSO and COTAMO.

CIP Minani outlined over speeding, recklessness, drunk driving and using mobile phones while driving as some of the major causes of road accidents.

"When you carry more than one person or load passengers and luggage, you are increasing the risks of accidents. Riding a motorcycle when one is under the influence of alcohol, they risk losing balance, hence accidents” Minani told motorcyclists.

"Traffic lights and signposts must not be violated and one should stop every time a police officer stops them,” he added.

He also warned them against aiding or involving in criminal acts like drug trafficking and smuggling.

One of the motorcyclists, Vedaste Bagabo who spoke on behalf of his colleagues said that they pledge not only to abide by traffic rules but also to work closely with the police to ensure road safety.

"There is no reason why accidents should continue to claim lives and destroy properties when we have the ability to avoid them; we pledge to cooperate with the police to ensure complete road safety,” said Bagabo.
