Choose an exemplary person for a mentor

Dear counsellor,

I always hear people attributing their success to people they call ‘mentors’. Please help me understand who a mentor is and whether my performance in class will improve if I get one. How can I identify a good mentor?

inding a good academic mentor is one of the best things to do to achieve success in your studies. A mentor is someone who will be inspirational to your personal and career development and can cheer you up whenever your morale is down. This is a person you can go to for support, advice and one whose personality you admire. The role of the mentor is to ensure that you take advantage of all resources that are available to help in the learning process. This may include such options as study groups, free seminars, and other tools that are helpful in your learning.

An academic mentor may be assigned to a student by an institution or sought out by the student. At the heart of the process of effective mentoring is the relationship with the student. Academic mentors serve as role models for students engaged in the learning process and the responsibilities go far beyond teaching to understanding of the student’s skills so that they are nurtured and used to the best advantage. At the same time, the academic mentor will attempt to broaden the identified set of skills by encouraging the development of additional ones.

You can also find a mentor outside your academic institution by identifying an inspirational and compartible personality through social or academic events like workshops, seminars, sports events and other social gatherings. Alternatively, your parents can act as your mentors since they are more knowledgeable than you in a number of things. All you need to do is talk to them about it so that they can make it a priority. Good luck.

Although it is not easy to get a mentor, everyone should endeavour to find one — a role model to inspire you in key aspects of life. Look around and you will find someone who can mentor you.

It is true mentors help us change our attitude towards life and those around us. I would advise you to find someone who has similar interests as yours to be your mentor.

Young people meet many challenges along the way which they find hard to overcome. This is where a mentor comes in handy. Usually, a mentor is more experienced and can help you jump hurdles easily.
