Police in Kayonza District on Friday impounded a vehicle that was intercepted carrying 400kilogrammes of cannabis packed in eight sacks.
According to Eastern Province Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, Police got a tip off about a vehicle en route to Kigali from Kirehe District, carrying drugs at dawn.
"We deployed along the road and when the vehicle, registration number RAB 448P approached Nyagatovu in Rwamagana town, the suspects saw traffic police and tried to turn back to dodge arrest,” said Kayigi.
"Police officers pursued them on a feeder road where they had branched, but they abandoned the vehicle and escaped. We have since impounded the vehicle but investigations are still underway to apprehend all those connected to the drug trafficking.”
Kayigi said Police have identified the owner of the vehicle and arrested two suspects in connection with the drugs.
Meanwhile, local leaders have warned residents against drug trafficking.
"It’s absolutely inconceivable that despite our constant anti-drugs campaigns, some people have resisted. They should stop the business forthwith,” said Gerald Muzungu, Kirehe District Mayor.
Drugs are sneaked into Rwanda from neighbouring countries through porous borders.
