The 2014 Rwanda Golf Open champion in the Amateurs category, Emmanuel Rutayisire is upbeat about his chances to successfully defend his title—this year’s tournament is set for November 11-14 at the Par-72 Kigali Golf Club course in Nyarutarama.

The 24-year old made a historic debut last year and he hopes to become the first player to make it two wins out of two, however, if he’s to achieve it, he will have to beat off stiff competition from local rivals including Aphrodis Nyirinkwaya (winner in 2013), Aloys Nsabimana and Jules Mutesa (2012 champion).

For Rutayisire, winning on his debut last year raised his profile and makes him a better player heading into this year’s event, which will attract more than 150 players from regional countries.

"I am confident and I have no doubt I can win this year’s title because I feel I am at a better level compared to last year when I won it,” Rutayisire Sunday Sport.

He revealed that his intensive training that include hitting 100 balls range daily, gymnastics and jogging have boosted his preparations mentally and physically.

The defending champion adds, "I am not under any pressure whatsoever, we have had good preparations with my coach (Emmanuel Ruterana) and he has helped me develop my game considerably.” 

According to the organisers-the Rwanda Golf Union, this year’s tournament will have a total of 50 amateur golfers from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burundi, DR Congo and hosts Rwanda.
