I would love to join a vocational school after Senior Six because I have a passion for practical education. Unfortunately, my parents insist that I must join university arguing that vocational schools are for ‘failures’. How can I convince my parents to grant me my wish?

I would advise you to follow your passion. Sit down with your parents and explain to them that the skills, abilities and competencies that are needed by the nation are embedded in vocational and technical education, which are central to a nation’s social and economic emancipation. If your passion is to acquire specific training and education which is typically bound for blue-collar jobs in the workforce, rather than pursuing careers in white-collar disciplines, it’s important that you raise your passion at the top of every other career option and be frank to your parents about your choice.
Show them how the speed of a nation’s development is directly related to the quantity and quality of vocational skills possessed by its workforce. The higher the quality of vocational skills, the faster society grows. Explain to them that you are much more determined to even get a degree in any area you choose to pursue through this route. Vocational education which you receive now will allow you to move faster into the job opportunity that you desire. More importantly, focusing on the career of your interest will persuade you to complete the programme more easily and successfully and have a higher chance of landing good jobs. Therefore, your parents have to recognise the significance of vocational and technical education and accord you with the desired attention and support you deserve. This will, however, require a humble approach if you are to secure your parents attention and ultimately get their support.
YOU DEBATE
Alex Nshimiyimana, Vocational school teacher
Don’t give up on the course of your interest just because your parents think otherwise. There are many people who have taken your desired path and made it in life. Keep talking to your parents, they will relent.
Anita Mutesi, Salesperson
Passion should be the foundation for everything we do. Enlighten your parents about the benefits of having practical skills and show them successful people who graduated from vocational schools.
Eldephonse Murwanashaka, a mechanic
I’m glad you think highly of vocational schools, that is the first step towards success. Continue educating your parents about the value of technical education.
Alphonse Nsabimana, businessman
Look for an understanding and respected family friend and tell him what exactly is happening. Ask him to speak with your parents about your wish and why it’s important to grant it to you. I’m sure your parents will listen.
