Upcoming rider Yves Kabera Iryamukuru has passed away following a car crash in Shyorongi in Rulindo District yesterday during the Rwanda Cycling Cup event from Rubavu to Kigali.
The 22-year-old cyclist was involved in a head-on collision with a coaster that was heading to the Northern Province.
Iryamukuru was way behind the peloton when the accident occurred and it was Benediction and Team Rwanda cyclist Janvier Hadi who came to his attention and made sure he was rushed to CHUK in Kigali for treatment.
Unfortunately, Iryamukuru passed away hours later. He has been a member of Fly Cycling Club for the past one year and was among the promising young riders hoping to make it to the national team soon.
"His death has saddened us so much. It is a total shock. He was a very promising young rider and a great person who was ambitious,” said Bosco Inatave, the president of Fly Cycling Club.
