Booyoung Co. Ltd, a South Korean firm, will today, hand over educational equipment worth $2.6 million (Rwf2 billion) to the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), in a ceremony that will take place at Kimihurura Primary School in Gasabo District. 

The donation includes 20,000 non-reflective metallic chalkboards and 2,000 digital pianos for primary schools across the country.

"This equipment will boost quality education, more specifically promoting the musical education in the country.

Primary school pupils will have a good foundation that will enable them to excel in music schools in upper secondary school,” Ismael Janvier Gasana, the Director-General for Rwanda Education Board, told The New Times yesterday.

Gasana said today’s ceremony marks the fulfillment of the grant agreement that MINEDUC signed with the firm early this year, but the materials were brought into the country in different batches. He said that at least one primary school in each district will benefit.

"Those are the first kind of pianos to be distributed in schools and will attract pupils to vocational education.

Music has been part of curriculum in primary schools, but there were no equipment for practical learning. The easily portable chalkboards are also crucial to teachers when they want to offer lessons outside the classrooms,” he said.

Dr. Lee Joong-Keun, the chairman of Booyoung Co. Ltd, and Dr Papias Malimba Musafiri, the Minister for Education, will grace today’s handover ceremony which will take place at Kimihurura Primary School, according to MINEDUC.
