Striker Ernest Sugira netted a brace against his former club AS Muhanga on Friday afternoon at Muhanga stadium to help AS Kigali temporarily go top of the Azam Rwanda Premier League table standing.

Sugira, a first choice striker with the national team, was yet to find the net after playing over 270 minutes in four matches this season coming into Friday’s game against a team sitting at the bottom of the table with a solitary point.

"He is good guy and I think he fully deserved his two goals to get off the mark, I am happy for him and if you see your strikers scoring goals, it gives the whole team confidence,” AS Kigali coach Eric Nshimiyimana said.

The win took AS Kigali to the summit of the standings with 11 points, one point ahead of Police FC, who were due to play against Rayon Sports on Saturday.

Sugira, who is in his second season with AS Kigali after his move from APR FC at the start of last season, thanked his teammates for helping him to score the two goals.

He said, "I am happy to score two goals, but I must thank my teammates, who set up for me both goals. I hope these goals will open the door for many more to come as the season progresses.”

Last season, the 24-year old, netted 8 goals in the league. "I want to improve and score many goals and I believe I can do it.”

Elsewhere, SC Kiyovu jumped to third spot with nine points after securing a deserved 2-0 win over Marines at Mumena stadium in Nyamirambo.

Abdul Karim Gashugi and Djuma Yussuf Habimana were on target for the ‘Green Baggies’, who under caretaker coach Aloys Kanamugire, in the absence of head coach Innocent Seninga, who is currently in Germany attending a two-month training course.
