Gor Mahia forward Meddie Kagere has been crowned the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya/Sportpesa most outstanding player for the month of September. 

According to the mediamaxnetwork.co.ke, the 29 year-old former Rwanda international emerged first in a race closely pitting him and City Stars hit man Ebrima Sanneh, AFC Leopards striker Lamine Diallo and Sony Sugar goalkeeper Allan Owiny.

"I am very happy after receiving this award and I thank the sports journalists and the sponsors who have made it possible. I wouldn’t have done it without the help of my team mates who have been great. Actually this is not my award but their award,” Kagere noted.

Kagere scooped 20 points in a poll by sports journalists, beating the closest challenger, Diallo by 10 points while Sanneh ranked third with nine points.

The former Mukura, SC Kiyovu and Rayon Sports striker becomes the seventh player to win the award which comes along with a 42 inch television from South Korean electronics giant LG and KSh50000 from league title sponsors Sportpesa.

September also marked the first month the award has been given based on matches involving competitions other than just the top tier league in Kenya.

With only a single round of league matches played the entire month, Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) based September’s performance on the GOtv Shield and the KPL Top Eight tournament to gauge the players.

The league’s third prolific goal scorer, Kagere, netted four goals during the month under review, helping his club wrap the 2015 league title and keeping alive Gor Mahia’s dream for a treble.

He becomes Gor Mahia’s third recipient of the coveted gong following earlier feats by midfielder Ali Abondo who won the inaugural trophy and overlapping right-back Karim Nzigiyimana who emerged best in June.
