Amavubi head coach Johnny Mckinstry says the national team needs a striker who can score a goal off one or two chances after the national side failed to find the net in their two friendlies against Tunisia and Bukina Faso last week.

"We are lacking that killer instinct in front of goal. At club level, a striker in the Rwandan Premier League may have 4 or 5 chances and be able to score. However at international level, he will only get 1, or maybe 2 chances.

So that killer instinct to ensure you take the chance when it comes to you is very important,” Mckinstry said.

Amavubi return tomorrow from Morocco and will resume residential camp on November 8 in preparation for the first leg of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Libya which will be played in Tunisia in mid November.

The second leg will be played in Kigali on November 17 with Amavubi keen to register a positive result which will see them qualify for the group stages of the World Cup qualifiers.

Although the national side lost both of their friendlies, Mckinstry says the team is not far away from where it is supposed to be, adding that the three friendlies were against teams that are ranked much higher than Rwanda.

"We selected the games against Gabon, Burkina Faso and Tunisia because we knew they would be difficult. And for the most part, the football we have played has been of a high standard.  So we are moving in the right direction.”

"If we play against Libya with the same quality that we have displayed this week, then I am confident we will get the right result and move into the group stages of the World Cup,” the 30-year-old said.

The Irish coach also said Amavubi is working very hard to prepare for Libya behind the scenes.

"We are analyzing videos of their play and reviewing reports of their players. So we will be well prepared for the challenge.”
