Groupe Scolaire Ndera Primary School reclaimed the Kigali Mini Cricket boys’ and girls’ titles after edging out their opponents on a day that was filled with fun at Kicukiro cricket ground on Friday.
The tournament, organized by Rwanda Cricket Development Program, saw 10 teams compete in the one-day event that was witnessed by current and former national team players.
"I am happy to be part of the winning team,” said Gisele Ishimwe, one of GS Ndera star players.
Meanwhile, the Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) general manager, Joshua Mwanja said that, "I perceive 2015 as the triumphant year for our development program. It is the effect of the regional coaches that have put in more effort in training youngsters within the 65 schools all over the country.”
"We really deposited our slogan into action CATCH THEM YOUNG. The improvement of our regional schools teams results are the highlight of 2015,” added the former Uganda international.
According to Mwanja, competitions like this bridge the gap between U19s and U16.
The Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee vice president, Elie Maninarora, who was the guest of honor, noted that, "It is overwhelming to see the passion and enthusiasm from the players and the coaches during the tournament.”
"Surely the abundance of talent on display at this competition makes this project important within the cricket development field,” he stated.
