The 2nd edition of the Kigali mini cricket tournament for primary schools starts today at Kicukiro cricket ground.
This year’s tournament has attracted 10 teams and according to Rwanda Cricket Association’s (RCA) Kigali region development coach Eric Hirwa, "the contest is expected to be very competitive because all teams have gone through proper training.”
Defending champions St. Espirit (boys) and Groupe Scolaire Ndera (girls) are hopeful to retain their titles.
The other participating schools include; St. Joseph Primary school, Excella and Groupe Scolaire Kicukiro—all schools will field two teams with each team comprising of nine players.
"This tournament is important as it helps us create cricket interest in the U13s, which is in line with our development strategy to promote cricket in Rwanda under the slogan "CATCH THEM YOUNG”,” said RCA’s general manager, Joshua Mwanja.
Earlier in the year, a similar tournament was held in Huye district, Southern Province and Kinihira in the Northern Province.
