Police handball club claimed the national league title with a game to spare following 49-15 victory against struggling University of Rwanda college of Education (UR-CE) on Saturday at the latter’s home ground.

Jean Paul Muhawenayo and Gilbert Mutuyimana scored 8 goals apiece for Police, who lead the league table with 51 points, three ahead of second-placed APR, who had earlier defeated UR-CE at the same venue in a match which was interrupted by rain.

Police will meet APR on the last day of the season at the weekend, in a game where even a win for APR won’t change the destiny of the title as Police have a far superior goal difference but most importantly, even if they lose, they still get one point, which will take their final tally to 52.

At the other end of the table, Nyakabanda (20 points) were pushed to the bottom of the table after losing to UR-CE at Kimisagara, but with three games to play they can leapfrog ninth-placed University of Rwanda College of Arts and Social Sciences, who have 21 points and one game to play.
