For the first time since joining the Zone V corridor four years ago, South Sudan will be represented at the forthcoming Fiba Africa Zone Five Club Championship that starts on Sunday and runs through to October 11 at Amahoro indoor stadium.
For the first time since joining the Zone V corridor four years ago, South Sudan will be represented at the forthcoming Fiba Africa Zone Five Club Championship that starts on Sunday and runs through to October 11 at Amahoro indoor stadium.
According to the Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) secretary general Richard Mutabazi, Africa’s youngest nation will be represented by National Engineering and Logistics Basketball Club in men’s category.
Another surprise participating team is Gezira Basketball Club, the 2014 Egypt premier basketball league champions, who have confirmed their participation.
Founded in 1982, the nine-time league champions Gezira is the third most successful club in Egyptian basketball history behind Al Ittihad (14 league titles) and Zamalek with 12 titles.
The week-long regional meet has attracted a total of 18 teams, 11 in men and 7 in women’s category respectively, coming from seven zone five member states namely; Ethiopia, Egypt, South Sudan, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya hosts Rwanda.
Organizers Rwanda will field four teams including the 2012 winners Espoir and former semi-finalists CSK in men’s category with Ubumwe and APR will vie for the women’s crown.
