Rwanda Services' sector inspires 7% growth in 2015 second quarter

Rwanda's economy in the second quarter of 2015 expanded by 7 per cent compared to 6.1 per cent in the same period last year, according to GDP figures of the second quarter.

Rwanda's economy in the second quarter of 2015 expanded by 7 per cent compared to 6.1 per cent in the same period last year, according to GDP figures of the second quarter. Yusuf Murangwa, head of the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda announced the results at a press conference in Kigali today. The growth in the second quarter (April to June), is lower than the 7.6 per cent recorded in the first quarter of this year running between January and March but it’s still higher than 6.5 per cent being targeted by government as annual growth for the whole of this year. Murangwa announced that the 7 per cent growth in the second quarter was boosted by the service sector which grew by 6 per cent and contributed 3.1 percentage points to the GDP growth. Growth in the agriculture sector was 5 per cent and contributed 1.7 percentage points to the overall GDP growth the second quarter while activities in the industry sector grew by 10 per cent to contribute 1.5 percentage points. Finance and economic planning Minister Claver Gatete said the trend is positive and could see the economy surpassing the 6.5 per cent growth projected for this year.
