In order to block someone, open up an email from them, click the drop-down menu next to the reply arrow, and choose "Block Sender.”
The "Unsubscribe” feature is also very useful, and allows you to stop receiving promotional emails without having to navigate through complicated we’re-so-sorry-to-see-you-go web pages.
"Unsubscribe” is available on Gmail’s updated Android app (along with "Block Sender”), so if you’re an iOS or web user, you’re out of luck for the time being.
But if you are an Android user who wants to unsubscribe, go to the promotional email, hit the "More” option (represented by the three vertical dots) in the top right corner, and choose "Unsubscribe.”
Whatever can help you get close to inbox zero, right?
