Jeanne d’Arc Girubuntu is set to become the first Rwandan female rider ever to compete at the World Cycling Championships in Richmond, Virginia in USA when she takes part in the women’s individual time trial this evening.

The 19-year-old, who has been training at the World Cycling Center in Aigle, Switzerland for the past three months, is looking to make quite an impression against the world’s most talented and experienced female riders.

 Aware of the challenge ahead, Girubuntu admitted that her opponents boast of massive experience but she is ready for the challenge.

 "I am very excited that I am going to compete at the World Cycling Championships and also as the first Rwandan female rider. It is a very big competition that has strong riders but I have trained well and will try to do my best,” said Girubuntu.

 The teenager revealed that she has learnt so much during her stay in Switzerland especially riding on a circuit.

She noted that, "I have been taught by very many coaches who are very good at cycling and have taught me a lot about the techniques around circuits, ascending and descending and this will help me at the World Championships.”

Girubuntu fell short of a bronze medal at the just concluded All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville by mere microseconds in the individual time trial but she hopes to bounce back and register a good performance.
