Midfielder Imran Nshimiyimana came off the bench to score a late winner as Police FC defeated Mukura 2-1 in the opening match of the Azam Rwanda Premier League played yesterday at Muhanga Stadium.
Andre Casa Mbungo’s team took the lead through striker Isaie Songa on the 7th minute.
Mukura, despite going down, re-organised to put pressure on Police and it paid off in the 34th minute when Muhadjir Hakizimana scored a brilliant free kick after coming so close on a couple of occasions before the breakthrough.
In the second half, Hegman Ngomirakiza, Jacques Tuyisenge, Songa and Fabrice Twagizimana missed chances to restore Police’s lead. Mbungo brought on Nshimiyimana to replace Muhammad Mushimiyimana and the Rwanda international netted the winner with six minutes to time.
Mukura striker Amani Mugisho had a good chance to equalise but failed to hit the target and with time running out, Youssuf Habimana failed to beat Police goalie Emery Mvuyekure in a one-on-one situation.
In the day’s other match, SC Kiyovu played goalless against newcomers Bugesera in Nyamata.
Actions continue today when champions APR kick off their title defence away with Etincelles at Tam Tam Stadium in Rubavu.
