DARFUR - The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operation has awarded medals of service to Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the auspices of the United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in Zam Zam, Sector North.
Among those who were awarded medals presented by Alain Le Roy, the Head of the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, were soldiers of the Rwandan contingent who lost their lives on July 8, 2008 during an ambush in Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur.
Their medals were handed to UNAMID Deputy Force Commander Major General Emmanuel Karenzi, who was also decorated, on October 9.
During the award ceremony, Le Roy praised UNAMID for its service in the restoration of peace and stability for the people of Darfur.
According to reports, he reaffirmed the full commitment of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operation (DPKO) to do whatever possible to provide full support and equipment to UNAMID so that it can accomplish its mission.
The UNAMID Sector North Commander, Brigadier General Dennis Rutaha, on his part welcomed the USG and commended the troops for their efforts in Darfur.
He also paid tribute to the soldiers and colleagues who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty as they pursued efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Darfur.
