RUSIZI — The Rwanda Human Rights Commission (RHRC) on Monday, trained 72 residents on various issues concerning  human rights.

The trainees largely those believed to have been left behind by the country’s history were drawn from all 18 Sectors of Rusizi District.

The workshop took place at Centre Pastoral Incuti in Kamembe, Rusizi district.

Théogene Nkuranga, the district vice Mayor in charge of economic affairs, who officially opened the two-day seminar urged participants to always struggle for their human rights and to avoid violating children’s rights.

He also called upon the trainees to participate in all government programmes like community work, to work hard and form up income generating cooperatives.

Addressing participants, Maître Laurent Nkongoli, the Commissioner of RHRC asked them to always fight for the promotion of human rights and justice in their areas.

"I call upon you as responsible Rwandans to report human rights violations to the concerned authorities in time…. because that’s when our nation would achieve total security and peace,” Nkongoli told the trainees.

Participants were further asked to respect women rights and to promote gender balance in the region.

Agnes Mukarukaka, who spoke on behalf of the trainees hailed the RHRC and the government for organising the workshop.

"We have learnt a lot of things from this seminar as regards to our daily basic human rights and responsibilities. We thank the Rwandan Human Rights Commission and the government in general for caring about its citizens.”
