The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Emmanuel Gasana has urged district police commanders to refine their leadership skills in order to improve community relations and security.

He made the call yesterday while opening a three-day leadership retreat for 63 commanders and District Judicial Police at the Police Training School (PTS) in Gishari.

Speaking at the opening, IGP Gasana noted that the retreat was important in order to improve the capability of police officers.

"Emerging security issues sprout up almost every day due to changes in modernity and technology. This means that we need experienced and skilled leaders who are up to the task of leading the force in overcoming such challenges and ensuring that Rwanda is always safe and secure,” IGP Gasana said.

"Police officers should always be aware of the environment in which they operate and how to overcome criminal organizations that adapt to new forms of criminality aided by technology. Therefore, you are expected to gain an understanding of how to apply leadership competencies in order to obtain the highest level of performance and accountability”.

Gasana also urged police leaders to be champions and models of good leadership standards, as well as empower emerging leaders to execute police goals professionally.
