Airtel Rwanda has reached out to provide support to Burundian refugees in Mahama Camp in Kirehe District, Eastern Province. Last week, the firm partnered with the International Organisation for Migration and donated solar energy panels, clothes, shoes, computers and a printer to improve the living conditions in the camp and ease operations.

Denise Umunyana, the Airtel Rwanda head of CSR and corporate communications, said the solar panels will be used to light the health facility at the camp.

She said the environmentally-friendly energy source will enable health workers serve patients better and for extended hours. "Airtel Rwanda aims at improving the general livelihood of communities, not only by providing them with affordable and reliable telecom solutions, but also by giving them basic needs that can improve their lives. We hope this support can help improve the quality of living in the camp,” she said.

Mahama Camp is currently home to 43,000 Burundian refugees, with 1,800 unaccompanied minors.

American Refugee Committee recently started constructing model shelters to enable the refugees lead a normal life, among other interventions by charitable groups.
