THE National taekwondo team depart for the All Africa Games today with hope to return with  Rwanda’s first medal in taekwondo at Africa’s biggest sports event in the Republic of Congo.

The team will be making their second appearance at the quadrennial multi-discipline competition. The 11th All Africa Games started on September 4 and will run through to September 19.

The athletics team also left today to join Team Rwanda at the All Africa Games that also includes volleyball, beach volleyball, karate, fencing, powerlifting, tennis and cycling teams.

Talking to Times Sport in an interview yesterday, team captain Regis Iyumva said the target is at least winning one medal for the country.

"Our major aim is a podium finish and I am confident the target is achievable. We have had enough time for preparations (training) for this competition. We also had different competitions on the local, regional and international level and that places us among top challengers,” Iyumva told this paper.

The team of three includes two male and one female. They include Iyumva (under 58kg), Martin Nduwayezu (under 54kg) and Delphine Uwababyeyi (under 46kg) who will be vying for medals from September 16-19 at Tangalai gymnasium.
