Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan is doubtful for today’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match against Rwanda at Amahoro national Stadium.
Gyan, who has scored 48 goals in 90 appearances for the Black Stars, trained with his teammates yesterday but according to soccerway.com, the 29-year old suffered a knee injury in Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Republic of Congo in Brazzaville.
During yesterday’s afternoon light training session at Amahoro stadium, it was evident that the captain was not fully fit as he avoided contact and ice was applied to his knee at the end of the session.
The West African giants overpowered Mauritius 7-1 in their opening qualifier in Accra two months ago, with Gyan and Jordan Ayew leading the way with two goals each while Rwanda registered a 1-0 away win against Mozambique in Maputo.
Although only a friendly, the beaten finalists at the 2015 AFCON tournament in Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, let a two-goal lead slip in Brazzaville, before Jordan Ayew spared their blushes with a winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
It remains to be seen whether Gyan will feature in today’s top of the table clash in Group H, but with Rwanda full of confidence at home following six successive wins in front of their home supporters, Avram Grant will certainly be hoping he can field his first-choice starting XI.
