RE: "New Kirehe feeder road to improve market accessibility” (The New Times, September 3).

Kirehe District leaders need to work much harder; as it is they are lagging behind in every important aspect of development compared with other parts of the country, from regions bordering Uganda, to those near DR Congo and Burundi.

I usually use the road from Gasenyi (Burundi) to Maleba and Nyarubuye every time I visit Rwanda. Members of my family live in those areas. The road itself looks very important because it takes you to Nyarubuye Parish, Nasho border and then to Kigarama, but during rains it’s not passable at all despite the fact that villages along this road are good farmers of bananas, maize, rice and many more — it’s a highly fertile land.

The fact that this district borders the Akagera River, you wouldn’t expect to be seeing people drinking water from swamps. Before and after passing a certain Kigina primary school, there is a water channel that flows from the Akagera into Nyabarongo, but villagers are fetching water in these channels for home use.

Kirehe folks should learn from their counterparts in Huye, Nyamasheke and Karongi districts — I usually read that they tend to shine in the implementation of Imihigo (performance contracts). Why can’t Kirehe borrow a leaf from such good performers?
