Rwanda Taekwondo team are bidding to successfully defend their Korea Ambassador’s Cup title for the third successive year when the 2015 edition gets underway on Friday.
The competition, to take place at Petit Stade in Remera, will end on Saturday.
The competition was launched in 2013 by South Korea’s Ambassador to Rwanda with the view of promoting and developing the martial art sport in Rwanda and the region.
Rwanda national team trainer Alain Irene Bagire said they will be going into the tournament with the intention to retain the title which would give their players more confidence ahead of the All African Games slated for September 4-19 in Congo Brazzaville.
"We have had enough time to train and all my players are in a good frame of mind and are ready to give their best, I am confident we shall successfully defend our title,” said Bagire.
He noted that the competition is vital, particularly for the three players who will represent the country in Brazzaville in September. Rwanda will be represented by two boys and one girl namely; Regis Inyumba (58kgs), Martin Nduwayezu (54kgs) and Delphine Uwababyeyi (46kgs).
The Ambassador’s Cup is expected to attract a total of 95 players from the regional countries namely; Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and hosts Rwanda.
