RWANDA Defence Force (RDF) handball and basketball teams were on Monday evening crowned champions of the 2015 East African Military Games in Kampala, Uganda.
RDF handball team claimed the gold medal with six points out of a possible eight after losing only one game – against Tanzania – having overwhelmed holders Kenya, Uganda and Burundi to emerge 2015 champions at the two-week long regional competition.
"We are thrilled to win this competition, this is something we have been dreaming of for a while. A great thanks to the Rwandan community in Uganda for coming out strongly to support us,” coach Anaclet Bagirishya told Times Sport on Monday.
Right-winger Amandin Rugira of Rwanda finished the top-scorer in the tournament with 39 goals while compatriot Jean Paul Muhawenayo was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the handball tournament.
In basketball, Rwanda clinched the title with seven out of eight points, having won three and lost one game – against Burundi, who finished silver medalists.
In cross country, Rwanda won the bronze medal, finishing behind gold medal winners Kenya and Uganda. Women ran a distance of 8km while their male counterparts covered 12km.
In netball, Uganda’s Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) team won the competition unchallenged, while 2014 winners Tanzania and Kenya completed top three with silver and bronze medals, respectively. Rwanda finished in fourth.
Should UPDF and defending champions Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) play out a draw this afternoon at Mandela National Stadium, Rwanda will automatically emerge champions in the football competition as well.
As it stands, Rwanda lead with seven points from four matches with two victories, one draw and one defeat, while Uganda and Kenya are level on five points from three games each.
The ninth Annual East African Military Games and Cultural Event kicked off on August 16 and is due to end today at Mandela Stadium Namboole ion Kampala.
