Groupe Scolaire Sainte Famille were crowned champions of the first ever Rugby 7s Main Cup after holding off a second half recovery by Kenya’s Kangaru School to win 21-14 in the FEASSA Games played at Save secondary school ground in Gisagara district on Saturday.

Pierre Niyoyita and Gerald Niyoneza touched down in the first half with fly half Carlos Simbi converting both tries.

Tensions were high as Kenyans and Rwandans, who turned up in big numbers, rallied behind their own.

The second half saw the Kangaru force two tries from Hannington Mbaka both converted by Kevin Mburu, however, a try from Jean de Dieu Hakizimana converted by Isimbi put the home team in firm control and out of reach for the Kenyans, who were favourites to win title.

In the Plate final, St. Peters Mumias of Kenya were no match for Uganda’s St. Joseph Layibi as the Ugandans, inspired by Captain Gabriel Oredo, rained in eight unanswered tries.

Meanwhile, in the Bowl Cup, scrum half Patrick Ikoraukwishaka scored and converted ET Mukingi’s two tries as the Rwandan school claimed the title against Ntare School of Uganda.

Mbarara High School grabbed the consolation for Uganda in the Shield Cup after they defeated Rwanda’s APICUR with two tries from Anorld Atukunda and Muhereza Davis.

Rugby 15s 

In the 15s format, that involves seven schools, Laiser Hill Academy (Kenya) lead with 22 points in five games and they can claim the title in the last round of games today if they beat third-placed Hanna Mixed (Uganda), who have 16 points.

Defeat for Laiser Hill will see them having to rely on Kakamega stopping Maseno High School (both from Kenya). Maseno are on second position with 18 points and need a win to tie points with Laiser Hill at 22.
