KIGOMA High school will go into today’s final match against Saint Peter’s of Kenya seeking to win the boys’ handball title when the two schools square-off in the Brookside FEASSSA Games this morning at TTC Save grounds in Gisagara district, Southern Province.
En-route to the final, ES Kigoma beat Kibuli SS of Uganda 25-23 in semi-finals on Saturday and coach Sylvestre Mudaharishema believes today’s challenge is even stiffer but is confident his players can pull it off to win the competition.
"We are glad to reach the final; my players have given everything to be here. However, the challenge we are facing tomorrow (today) is even tougher, but I’m confident my players have got what it takes to emerge as champions,” Mudaharishema said in a post-match interview yesterday.
In the girls’ category, home-side ES Mukingi overcame Kamusinga of Kenya 22-21 in Saturday’s semi-finals to set-up a final clash against defending champions Gombe SS from Uganda.
It was also a lucky Saturday for Rwandan schools as Rusumo High School (boys) ousted compatriots St. Joseph Kabgayi in four sets (3-1) to reach the final while GS Indangaburezi saw off Kenya’s Lugulu 3-1.
However, the home teams were not as lucky in basketball following defeats for ETENI Rubavu against Kenya’s Upper Hill 68-57 (boys) while Lycee de Kigali narrowly lost 68-66 to Uganda’s Saint Mary’s Kitende (girls).
The biggest upset came in the boys’ football category when eight-time reigning champions Saint Mary’s Kitende lost 1-0 to Tanzania’s Alliance SS. Alliance will meet Masaka SS from Uganda in the today’s final.
