After defeating Luyanzi of Uganda in the quarter-finals 3-0 on Friday, Rwanda’s St Joseph Kabgayi are keen on winning the boys’ volleyball title at the ongoing East African Post-Primary Games in the Southern Province.

St Joseph overpowered Luyanzi in straight sets 25-16, 25-23 and 28-26 to reach the semi-finals scheduled for today but by press time, they were yet to know their semi-final opponent.

"We’re thrilled to reach semi-finals; every player did his best for the team to win. However, we need to stay calm and focused. The target we have here is to win the tournament, we won’t undermine any opponent.” St Joseph’s left-attacker Yves Mutabazi said after the match at UR-CASS court in Huye.

Elsewhere, Lycée de Kigali lost 40-35 to holders Shimba Hill of Kenya in girls’ basketball but still qualified for semi-finals where they will face Saint Mary’s Kitende of Uganda this morning.

In boys’ basketball, Rwanda’s ETENI and APICUR beat Maseno (Kenya) and Makongo (Tanzania) 54-37 and 70-64 respectively to qualify for semi-finals.

In tennis, Rwanda’s Ernest Habiyambera beat compatriot Etienne Niyigene 4-1, 4-0 to reach semi-finals in boys’ singles while Fabrice Tuyishime upset defending champion Boris Aguma of Uganda is three sets 4-1, 3-5 10-4.

ES Mutunda beat Tanzania’s Makongo 2-0 to finish top of pool B with 6 points from four matches in girls’ football and set-up a semi-final clasht with Burundi’s ECOTEC.

However, ES Mutunda were the only home team out of six (three male and three female) to reach the knock-out stages. The rest were all eliminated in the group stages.

Rwanda was represented by Muhanga TC, TS Nyamata and GS Inyemeramihigo (boys) as well as GS Remera-Rukuma, APAER Kabuga and ES Mutunda (girls).
