The Rwandan community in South Africa, on Saturday, convened at Sandton Convention Centre to celebrate progress made by their motherland since the Genocide against the Tutsi 21 years ago.

The event, that attracted more than 250 people, was organised by the Rwandan High Commission in South Africa.

Officiating at the event, Pamela Tshwete, the South African deputy minister for water and sanitation, lauded and acknowledged the achievements in various sectors of the country, calling for the bolstering of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Vincent Karega, Rwanda’s high commissioner to South Africa, took the participants through the recent sad history of the country, highlighting that the liberation efforts did a lot to transform the country.

"The progress has been made through unity and reconciliation and more can be attributed to the socio-economic growth and transformation,” Karega said.

He said the similarities between Rwanda and South Africa should be an opportunity to promote tourism and investment.

"The secret behind that success is cooperation and it is now 25 years of cooperation between South Africa and Rwanda, between RPF and the African National Congress before both parties came into leadership,” Karega added.

During the event, companies investing in Rwanda were awarded certificates of appreciation and the potential ones mobilised to visit or invest in Rwanda.
