Youngster Ernest Habiyambere beat Rwanda’s number two Olivier Havugimana in the final of the inaugural Umubano Hotel Tennis Open to win his first title in the senior category competition.
The 16-year old Habiyambere seeded number five at this tournament, dominated his older opponent in straights sets 6-3, 6-1 to claim the trophy and cash prize of Rwf150,000.
En-route to the final, Habiyambere beat fourth-seed Hamiss Gatete on Friday while Havugimana knocked out third seed Mathieu Uwizeyimana.
In the women’s category, top seed Meganne Ingabire beat archrival Gisele Umumararungu (2) in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win the title and Rwf150,000 cash prize.
In men’s amateur category, Aimable Mugarura beat Raphael Ngarambe to win the competition while in the U-14 boys’ tourney; top seed Joseph Kiza defeated unseeded Joshua Muhire to win the title.
