Rwanda’s women tennis number one Meganne Ingabire defeated fifth-seeded Olive Tuyishime in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, yesterday, to reach the semi-finals of the inaugural Umubano Hotel Open.
The 27-year-old Ingabire used her strong services and smart backhand strokes to see off her rival in one hour and 30 minutes to set up a last four clash with fourth-seeded Chantal Mutuyimana on Friday. Mutuyimana beat unseeded Evelyne Kwizera 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter-final.
In other quarter-finals, number two Gisele Umumararungu overwhelmed Flavia Kayitesi (8) 6-1, 6-1 to set-up a semi-final tie against Phiridaus Cyiza (3), who recovered from a set down to beat Itunga Mwamini (6) in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In men’s quarter-finals, 16-year-old Ernest Habiyambere came from a set behind to beat Mubarak Harerimana 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the semi-final where he will face fourth seed Hamiss Gatete.
