THE national cycling team (Team Rwanda) will compete in this year’s Tour do Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for August 25-30 in Brazil.
According to the head coach, Jonathan ‘Jock’ Boyer, Rwanda will be represented by five riders including; Jean Bosco Nsengimana, Hadi Janvier, Camera Hakuzimana, Joseph Biziyaremye and Joseph Aleluya.
"Team Rwanda has been invited for this year’s Tour do Rio and this is good for our riders as they have a chance to exhibit their potential in such a big competition,” the American trainer told Times Sport on Saturday.
He added, "This is good test for our riders because the race will have elite riders from around the word and I believe our riders will learn a lot by taking part in it. It is also good preparations ahead of All Africa Games (next month).”
The former Tour de France rider, Boyer, noted that Tour do Rio will also be good preparation for Team Rwanda riders ahead of this year’s Tour du Rwanda, which is scheduled for November 16-22.
Rwanda will use this race as part of preparations of All Africa Games slated for September 4-19 in Congo Brazzaville as well as Tour of Ivory Coast and Tour of Cameroon.
Team Rwanda last competed in Tour do Rio three years ago. In 2011, they finished 14th on their debut in the competition before securing a 15th place in overall standing the following year.
