Kicukiro district shut down restaurants that did not meet required hygienic standards last week in Kanombe and Kagarama Sectors.

Emerance Gatera, the Health Inspector in Kicukiro District, told The New Times that they closed the restaurants after a number of warnings which they failed to adhere to.

"We have always told owners of these restaurants to improve on the cleanliness of their eating places, and so those who did not meet the required standards were closed down,” Gatera said.

However, some of the people whose restaurants were closed told The New Times that they were optimistic their places would re-open as soon as they fulfill the district’s directives.

"As you can see, we are busy painting and cleaning the premises, after which we shall call the authorities to come and inspect us. Am sure by the end of the day, the place will meet the required standard of cleanliness,” said a restaurant owner in Remera.

According to Gatera, the inspection included motels and lodges in addition to restaurants.

"We looked at the kitchens, fridges, workers’ uniforms and a lot more. We gave them two months to carry out the necessary adjustments and now we are in the field checking whether they complied. Those who didn’t, we close them,” she explained.

The process of closing restaurants with poor hygiene is still going on.
